First Choice Cola’s Free Ride: How to Enjoy AR on Facebook

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is so committed to shifting the company's priority to the metaverse that he completely changed the name of his social media giant Facebook to Meta Platforms in late 2021. Meta's Reality Labs unit is responsible for developing the virtual reality and augmented reality technology that helps to create the metaverse. Unfortunately, Zuckerberg's ambitious metaverse goal is off to a rough start. Reality Labs lost $9.4 billion in the first three quarters of 2022, and the company said it expects Reality Labs operating losses will "grow significantly year over year" in 2023. On the bright side, Metaverse investors who have faith in Zuckerberg's long-term vision can scoop up META shares at a 55% discount to their price when Facebook announced its name change in October 2021.

Zuckerberg has been talking up VR more than usual lately, partly thanks to accelerated adoption of the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset (according to Facebook -- but the company does not explicitly report figures for sold VR hardware). The first 100,000 players to roll a burrito got to earn the equivalent of a free entree in the Chipotle app.

The rise of augmented reality started with games, like the extremely popular Pokemon Go. But brands quickly started using the technology in their marketing. Makeup company Sephora was among the first to popularize augmented reality marketing with its Virtual Artist app.

With virtual and augmented reality, you can offer your customers a unique perspective. They can try out dozens of products in minutes to find the best possible fit, or they can see firsthand the social impact their purchases have.

The idea of a virtual universe where people could interact with each other is not exactly a new thing. Platforms like Habbo Hotel (2000) and Second Life (2003) already developed a virtual world where avatars could run for free. But due to the rise in online gaming, augmented and virtual reality became mainstream, the term Metaverse started to gain even more attention. Therefore more enthusiasts started looking for ways to enter the metaverse.

Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown,[6] former students at Stanford University. It is known for representing a mobile-first direction for social media, and places significant emphasis on users interacting with virtual stickers and augmented reality objects. In July 2021, Snapchat had 293 million daily active users, a 23% growth over a year.[7] On average more than four billion Snaps are sent each day.[8] Snapchat is popular among the younger generations, particularly those below the age of 16, leading to many privacy concerns for parents.

Instead of just running a standard image ad, they decided to make things interesting and develop an augmented reality (AR) lens experience to bring their first ever TV campaign to life. Through these unique experiences, they acquired tons of new users and increased brand awareness.
